If you or a loved one has been thinking about getting a stairlift installation, you might be wondering what the process actually looks like from start to finish. The good news is that it is far simpler and less disruptive than most people expect. At ADL-Advances for Daily Living, we have been helping older adults and their families in Roanoke, VA, Salem, Lynchburg, Christiansburg, Covington, Princeton, WV, and surrounding areas hold onto their independence at home since 1993. Here is an honest, straightforward look at what happens on installation day and how we get you there.

It Starts with a Conversation, Not a Sales Pitch
Before anything gets installed, we sit down with you. We offer free, no-obligation in-home consultations, and that first visit is really about listening. Every staircase is a little different. Straight staircases, curved ones, narrow Victorian-era steps, wide farmhouse staircases — each situation calls for its own solution. We take careful measurements, talk through how the lift will fit your daily routine, and answer every question you have without any pressure to decide on the spot.
We install ACORN stairlifts, a brand our clients have consistently trusted and spoken highly of. Once we know which model suits your home and your needs, we can give you a clear picture of cost, timeline, and any insurance considerations. Many of our products are covered at least in part by private health insurance, so it is always worth asking about that during the consultation.
What Happens on Installation Day
When installation day arrives, you can expect things to move along smoothly and without a lot of chaos in your home. Here is a general picture of the process.
Our technician arrives with all the equipment needed for your specific staircase. The rail system is fitted first, secured directly to the stair treads rather than the wall, which means the installation does not require major structural changes to your home. That is a detail that surprises a lot of our clients in a good way.
Once the rail is in place, the chair unit is mounted and tested thoroughly. Our team takes the time to make sure everything operates exactly as it should before considering the job done. The entire process typically takes just a few hours for a straight staircase. Curved or custom configurations may take a bit longer, but we will give you a realistic timeframe upfront so there are no surprises.
Learning to Use Your New Stairlift
A stairlift does you no good if using it feels awkward or uncertain. Before we leave, we walk you through the controls at a pace that feels comfortable. We show you how to operate the joystick or paddle control, how to fold and unfold the seat and footrest, and what the safety features do. If a family member or caregiver is present, we make sure they understand the system too.
We are also available on-call 24 hours a day, seven days a week by phone. If a question or concern comes up after installation, whether that same evening or a month down the road, you can reach us. That kind of ongoing support matters a great deal to the clients we serve throughout Roanoke, Salem, Covington, Christiansburg, and beyond.
A Few Practical Things to Know Beforehand
There are a couple of small things you can do to make the installation go as efficiently as possible. Clearing the staircase of any items stored on the steps, and making sure the stairwell area has good lighting, helps the technician work safely and quickly. If your lift will be installed in a home where someone uses a wheelchair at the top or bottom of the stairs, let us know during the consultation so we can talk through the transfer setup.
Also, some products we carry do require a prescription, so if you are unsure whether that applies to your situation, just ask us early in the process. We are happy to guide you through any steps involved.
The Bigger Picture
A stairlift is more than a piece of equipment. For so many of the families we work with across Lynchburg, Princeton, WV, and the rest of our service area, it is what makes staying in a beloved home possible. Aging in place, on your own terms, in familiar surroundings, is something we genuinely care about helping people achieve. That is what has kept us doing this work for well over thirty years.
If you are ready to take the next step, or just want to ask a few questions before deciding anything, please give us a call or drop us an email. We are here to help, and there is never any obligation involved.
