Post-Surgical Care

Surgery is an intimidating prospect for most people. Whether it’s fear of the process, anesthesia, or downtime, we don’t go into surgery lightly. But if you require surgery, post-surgical care is just as essential to your healing journey. And it’s that post-surgical care where Advances for Daily Living can help.

Stairlifts to Stay Off Your Feet

Stairlift in Roanoke, the New River Valley, SalemDepending on the surgery, you may be required to stay off your feet as much as possible. Unsurprisingly, the most precarious time to be on your feet is when moving from one level of your home to another on your stairs.

While you can use a walker, crutches, a cane, or a wheelchair to efficiently move across level ground, using any of those mobility assistance tools on stairs is next to impossible. That’s why many patients choose to install a stairlift in their home after surgery, particularly a knee surgery or other procedure where your doctor prescribes keeping pressure off your leg joints as part of your healing process.

Stairlifts or wheelchair lifts are often the ideal tools to assist you in moving up and down your steps while walking isn’t in your best interest. Which is best for your home will depend on your needs. For many with wheelchairs, wheelchair lifts are the best option, but they also work well when the stairway is too narrow to add a stair lift.

For many staircases, adding a stairlift is the simplest solution. Most modern homes will accommodate them. However, during your evaluation process, ADL will assess your needs and make our recommendation based on your home and mobility concerns.

The length of time you’ll need a stairlift to assist you with your mobility needs varies between types of surgery and each individual’s healing. But for nearly all people going through post-surgical care, the need for mobility assistance is temporary, and they frequently would prefer not to invest in a permanent change to their homes.

Post-Surgical Care Healing and Pain Management

Of course, you’ll want to do more than just avoid hurting yourself. You’ll also want to aid in your healing whenever possible. ADL offers help for reducing inflammation and managing your pain.

Inflammation is part of the healing process, but sometimes, we want to reduce inflammation to reduce pain and speed up healing. Whether that’s right for you is a decision you should make with your doctor.

However, if inflammation reduction is suitable for you, ADL offers help with anodyne therapy machines. Anodyne therapy is FDA-cleared for inflammation. It works in conjunction with or instead of pain medication and can be an excellent addition to your post-surgical care routine.

Anodyne therapy uses infrared light, and in addition to easing pain and inflammation for surgery, it’s also often effective for neuropathy, stiffness, and even nerve damage.
