  • Indwelling catheters (urethral or suprapubic catheters)

An indwelling catheter is a tube that is inserted into the body.

The catheter Trusted Source rests in the bladder. Alternatively, the catheter may be inserted into the bladder through a small incision in the belly. To keep the catheter from slipping out of the body, a little balloon at the end is inflated with water.

  • Catheters that are attached to the outside (condom catheters)

It’s usually required for males who have a penis but don’t have urinary retention issues but have severe functional or mental disorders, such as dementia. The penis head is covered by a condom-like device. The condom device is then connected to a drainage bag via a tube. These may cause less skin irritation than condom catheters, which must be removed and reapplied daily.

  • Intermittent catheters (short-term catheters)

In some circumstances, you may only need a catheter following surgery for a brief time until your bladder empties. The short-term catheter must be removed once the bladder has emptied. It can be done through the urethra or a catheterization hole made in the lower abdomen.
